We left Etzweiler to have a look at the huge mining pit from an 'Aussichtspunt' (viewpoint), which was really impressive. Somewhere below us a bulldozer was moving sand around. A shovel of sand from a bulldozer is quite a lot of sand, but compared to the pit
it was like using a teaspoon on the beach.

Too wide, but too good to leave it out.

The pit is about 84 km2 (kilometers) large and a few 100 meters deep. A bit right of the middle of the picture you can vaguely see one of the mining machines.
.
For a measure of scale, this is one of the machines in 'close up'. The digging wheel alone has a diameter of 20 meters. (Picture borrowed from Tagebauweb.de)
.
Turning around we could see the smoke of another power station on the horizon. We decided to take a closer look and just drove towards the smoke.
