Etzweiler

27 sept 2002: Group expo with Panic, Petr and Tomas.

We crossed the border near Nijmegen, where we stopped to have a look at the deserted GWK (border money change office). The border was a few 100 meters further, clearly visible in the asphalt.

Border clearly visible in the road.

Etzweiler is a small village (+/- 1200 inhabitants once), now being demolished for mining brown coal. In a few years, nothing will be left of the village when the monstrous mining machines of Rein Braun AG come to eat the soil away.
Everything is being demolished, from centuries old houses to new apartment buildings. The inhabitants have been forced to move out, leaving their homes where they may have lived for generations.

The first we noticed when we entered the region near Etzweiler were the huge powerstations, billowing smoke and steam which can be seen at great distances.

Etzweiler looks like a normal village, only quiet and with all doors and windows bricked up. This time it wasn't that quiet though, as they were shredding trees and bushes.
A few houses are still inhabited. The dwellers try to make this clear by notices on the door and keeping their homes well maintained and freshly painted. Must be terrible to see the town fall apart and disappear around you.
