Oldenzaal

Ruin near Oldenzaal (3 jan. 2001)

I found this ruin on december 6 2001 next to the N1 from Oldenzaal to De Lutte. Later I came back to explore. At first I thought it was a farmhouse, but now my guess is that it is a ruin of a coach-house, with a small stable for the horses. The reason for my change of opinion is that it is located next to a (disused) driveway to a villa and there did not seem to have been any living rooms. But maybe the function of the building was changed later.

This picture was shot on december 6, the western side of the building.

A month later, the east side,

Trees growing 'indoors'.

Hi,

I have visited your website with interest.
The ruin you "discovered" near Oldenzaal next to N1, did or does indeed
belong to the villa nearby.
As you correctly assumed, it contained horse boxes as well as space for farm
implements.
To my knowledge, no-one ever lived in it. It used to have a straw roof with
a hooizolder.

My grandfather Joan Gelderman build the villa "de Hulst" in the 1920's. The
ruin was known to us as de stal.

In my time there was only one work horse, but in earlier years there were
also riding horses.

I enjoy your website, and looked with interest at the pictures of what
remains of the hoofdkantoor (later a nightclub I believe.)
[see Gelderman] I remember the
staircase and also the chandeliers. I am surprised that some of the lead
windows are still there. There also used to be a lot of oak "lambrezering"
in the place

Best regards,

Chris Gelderman
