Lock in the canal from the Leie to the Ieperlee.
They started work on the canal in 1864 but digging a tunnel or a cut through
the hill a bit further on proved difficult and the work was plagued by collapses
and landslides. They (finally) gave up in 1913. Yes, Belgium. |
